Switzerland is the riverfront community south of Fruit Cove along State Road 13, the William Bartram Scenic and Historic Highway, on the east bank of the St. Johns. It is older and larger-lot than the subdivisions to the north: river houses and ranches from the second half of the twentieth century on acre lots under live oaks, with 1990s and 2000s subdivisions filling in behind them. Metal is common on the older river homes, shingle on the rest, and the 1880s farmhouse and packing shed at Alpine Groves Park are the last standing pieces of the citrus era that named the place.

The river rises in a storm. Irma pushed the St. Johns to record levels in September 2017, and Milton in October 2024 put about three feet of surge above normal along the river. The oaks drop limbs in every windy front, and a low-slope porch roof under an oak canopy holds leaves and water through a three-day rain.
