Davis Shores is the northwest corner of Anastasia Island, across the Bridge of Lions from the Plaza and inside the city limits. Until 1925 it was marsh. D.P. Davis dredged and filled 1,500 acres that year for a Mediterranean Revival resort town, and the 1926 land bust left eleven of his buildings standing. The neighborhood filled in after the war with 1950s and 1960s concrete-block ranches under shingle and tile, and the original Davis houses with their barrel tile still stand among them.
Fill over marsh sits low. Matthew's surge on October 7, 2016, reached seven feet in Davis Shores and put water and sewage into homes across the neighborhood. Irma did it again in September 2017, Dorian's tide flooded the streets in September 2019, Ian's rain and Nicole's tide came in fall 2022, and Helene in September 2024 flooded the same blocks. Residents took Milton seriously two weeks later for that reason.
This site connects Davis Shores homeowners with an independent local roofing contractor by phone. It does not perform the work.
A shingle roof on a 1960s ranch past twenty years is a roof replacement permitted through the City of St. Augustine, not the county. A barrel-tile roof on one of the original Davis houses is a roof repair about the underlayment beneath the tile. A house that took water at the floor and wind at the roof in the same storm is two claims, and the insurance claims page covers keeping the roofing scope separate.
The Bridge of Lions and the marina at the foot of it are the landmark for the neighborhood, and the city's Planning and Building Department issues the permits. A contractor working here checks the flood zone and the evacuation zone before the roof, because both change what a storm does to the house.
